Medication Policy

The administration of prescribed medication, in accordance with the direction of a parent and family physician, to a student during school hours will be permitted only when failure to take such medicine would jeopardize the health of the student, or the student would not be able to attend school if the medicine were not made available during school hours.

For purposes of the policy adopted by the School Board, “Medication” shall be defined in the following manner:

Grades K – 8 all medicines prescribed by a physician, any patent drug, or cough medication. Cough drops are allowed when accompanied by a note from the parent.

Grades 9 – 12 all medicines prescribed by a physician.

**Before any medication may be administered to any student during school hours, written permission of the parent and the written order for the prescribing physician shall include the purpose of the medication, the dosage, the time at which or special circumstances under which the medication shall be administered, length of period for which medication is prescribed, and possible side effects of medication. ALL MEDICATION SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY A PARENT OR DESIGNEE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER.

The documents shall be kept on file in the office of the school nurse.
